Our Mission & Values

Moving You From Confusion & Fear to Clarity & Confidence

Who are we?

We are an educational space, resource hub, and support community for parents raising and supporting transgender, nonbinary and gender expansive offspring.

What’s Our Mission?

Our mission is to provide accurate resources and the necessary support parents need while raising healthy, well-adjusted, and happy transgender & gender-expansive kids.

Co-created by parents of trans youth and Dr. Shawn V. Giammattei, a clinical family psychologist and gender specialist, we strive to create the best place for parents with transgender/non-binary/gender-expansive children. Our private group helps parents and caregivers navigate the TransFamily Gender Journey, a path that every parent with a trans or gender expansive child ends up traversing.

At TransFamily Alliance, we believe in the power of community. We offer a main network accessible to any caregiver of a trans, non-binary, or gender expansive child, adolescent, or adult who has purchased a workshop or is a member of one of our premium groups. You are not alone in this journey, and we are here to ensure you never feel that way.

We also provide a range of resources video recordings, workshops, blogs, and a membership community. Our free resources, such as a glossary of gender terminology and a guide for parents whose children have recently come out as trans or non-binary, are designed to empower and educate.

TransFamily Alliance supports parents from all backgrounds and holds as part of its mission a full commitment to be supportive and accountable to issues of diversity. We welcome all parents regardless of age, race, gender, nationality, sexual orientation, physical ability, thinking style, religion, and physical location to our community. We believe that our personal backgrounds bring richness to our community.

The TransFamily Alliance is a community of parents of transgender, nonbinary, and gender diverse children of all ages. The private group helps parents and caregivers, step by step, navigate the TransFamily Gender Journey, one that all parents with trans or gender expansive offspring end up navigating. If you’re looking to become more gender informed so you can help your child navigate their own journey, this is the community for you.

The TransFamily Alliance Premium Group is a membership community of parents that was co-created in 2021 by parents of transgender and gender diverse youth and Dr. Shawn V. Giammattei, a clinical family psychologist and gender specialist, resulting in THE best place for parents with transgender, non-binary, and gender-expansive children to get accurate resources and the support they need while raising healthy, well adjusted, and happy people.

The TransFamily Gender Journey shows the common phases parents experience while navigating the world as the parent of a transgender, nonbinary, and gender diverse child. The gender journey for a parent follows a path that usually starts with a lot of fear and confusion. Of the six phases of the gender journey, the journey itself is not linear. As you work your way through the first phase, which may involve some denial and bargaining, you may find yourself faced with the reality that your child is dealing with significant gender stuff and needs your help to navigate it. If in this process you realize your child is transgender, nonbinary, and gender diverse, you quickly set out on a quest to find accurate information about what to do to help your child and to figure out if this is even something you need to deal with. When your child comes out to you as trans, non-binary, or in some way identifying as different than their assigned sex at birth, or you’ve noticed signs that gender could be an issue for them, you may find yourself feeling confused, not sure if this is the right path for them, and understandably concerned about their wellbeing. The power of language to shape our perceptions of other people is immeasurable and cannot be understated. Awareness of the language of a community, especially with respect to gender and sexual identity, can have a significant impact on uncovering the many misperceptions and myths associated with these concepts. Learn definitions and get examples of gender related terms that parents should know by downloading our free Glossary of Gender Terminology for Parents.

Find a full selection of books at our stellar Book Resource List including books from transgender writers, memoirs from parents raising transgender children, education and reference books for parents. You’ll find a variety of fiction and nonfiction books for young adults, tweens, and children of all ages.

The workshops offered in the network are on topics that TransFamily parents have requested. As new workshops are developed, members of the premium groups get first access for free. Parents who are not members of the TransFamily Alliance Groups will have the opportunity to purchase the workshop separately.
This live virtual workshop is designed to help you better understand your child’s experience and find language to talk about gender expansiveness with others by exploring your own relationship to gender. It offers you a very personal experience unpacking your own gender development along with other parents, who are also navigating their own gender journeys, and gain tremendous insight that will impact how you parent your kids. This workshop is currently offered twice per year. You can sign up to be on the waitlist for the next workshop.

Gender 101 course will teach you the basic information you need to know about the constructs of gender, sex, sexuality, gender identity, and gender expression, the impact of socialization and cultural influences, terminology, transitions, gender dysphoria, gender noise, and the various approaches to treatment. Regardless of where your kid goes with all of this, your understanding will help. Take your first step toward clarity and confidence raising a transgender, non-binary or gender-expansive kid by taking our Gender 101 Workshop for Parents.

A private sub group is currently being developed specifically to meet the needs of parents raising trans, nonbinary, or gender expansive BIPOC kids.
