If you’re the parent or caregiver of a trans, nonbinary, or gender-diverse young person, you’ve probably noticed how loud the conversation around gender has gotten. It can feel like your family is standing in the middle of something entirely new — something without a map, without precedent, without anyone who’s walked this path before you.
That’s exactly why we’re so glad to help spread the word about Trans History for Troubled Times: An Educational Workshop for Friends and Family, a live virtual training happening on October 23rd. Facilitated by trans historian, writer, and filmmaker Morgan M Page, this workshop offers something a lot of us didn’t grow up with: a real, accurate, evidence-based picture of where trans history actually comes from.
Why History Matters When You’re Raising a Trans Kid
One of the hardest parts of this journey is the fear — fear that your child will face a lifetime of rejection, that they’re navigating something unheard of, that you’re figuring this out alone. But the historical record tells a different story than the one fear tells.
Trans and gender-diverse people have always been part of the human story. From priestesses in Ancient Mesopotamia, to formerly enslaved people who found freedom and new identities in Civil War-era America, to the early clinics and communities that shaped modern transgender medicine — this workshop traces a lineage of resilience, not a lineage of isolation.
Understanding that history doesn’t erase the real challenges your family faces today. But it can loosen the grip that fear has on your imagination of what’s possible. You’re not the first family to navigate this. And your child is part of a much older, much more resilient community than the headlines suggest.
What You’ll Learn
Trans History for Troubled Times: An Educational Workshop for Friends and Family covers:
- How trans and gender-diverse identities have shown up across history and cultures — long before “transgender” was a word
- The origins of the medical and legal systems that have shaped, and often controlled, trans lives
- How race, colonization, and class have influenced trans experience over time
- How today’s cultural and political climate connects to a much longer historical pattern
- Real stories of real people — the ones who came before your child, and made space for them to exist
This isn’t an academic lecture disconnected from your day-to-day life. It’s a workshop built to give you language, context, and — hopefully — a little more peace of mind the next time fear creeps in.
Who This Workshop Is For
While this training was originally developed as continuing education for clinicians and other professionals, it’s also open to:
- Parents and caregivers of trans, nonbinary, and gender-diverse youth
- Extended family members and loved ones
- Anyone in the LGBTQ+ community who wants a clearer picture of their own history
No professional background or prior knowledge is required — just a willingness to learn.
