What Are They and Why Do They Matter?

You may have been reading or watching the news reporting on the newest anti-trans bills being passed in the U.S. Many states have recently proposed bills aimed at denying trans rights, and punishing supportive school teachers and staff, and medical professionals who would provide gender affirming care.

Gallup data released in February 2022 reflects a growing population of LGBTQ+ people, now making up 7% of the U.S. population, with a record-high 21% of our youngest generation of Americans, Gen Z.

A PBS/NPR/Marist poll states that 67% of Americans, including 66% of Republicans, oppose the anti-trans sports ban legislation proliferating across over 30 states.  (Source: HRC.org)

82% of Americans favor laws that protect LGBTQ+ people from discrimination in jobs, public accommodations, and housing.  (Source: prri.org)

So. . .

Why is this happening?

2021 was the worst year for the LGBTQ+ community as a record-breaking number of new anti-trans bills were proposed in more than 30 states across the U.S. 2022 is on track to surpass that.

“All of these heavy-handed mandates around parental and family involvement are related and part of a broader political push to exclude queer youth and reduce their access to educational opportunities.  […]  increasing the risk of LGBTQ+ young people being outed to families and parents who may not be affirming.”

Aaron Ridings, director of public policy at GLSEN
